I was introduced to music around age 10 when I studied piano. Having grown up in the NYC area, I came to greatly appreciate music and the arts. I spent 30 years at the U.S. Department of State, traveled to several countries, learned other cultures, retired and settled in Washington, DC where I've been ever since. I developed a love for jazz music, probably not all of a sudden, but it seeped in. I started going on jazz cruises, around 1990, where it really caught fire. I took jazz piano lessons and got further insight. I never thought about singing or even knew I could at least carry a tune until I joined a jazz choir, Capital City Voices, directed by Wayne Wilentz, at the age of 68 in 2018. I was given encouragement and went out on a limb and started singing in open mics at different jazz clubs around DC. My favorite spot is Mr. Henry's, a strong musical supporter, where Roberta Flack was discovered and started her career. I've also been recording with a local musician, Tom Saputo, who produces many albums and invites singers to appear on his compilations. Great opportunity!
Why I joined JazzVoice.com: It was recommended first off, by a current member. But, as I explored the site more, I realized that it would give so much valuable information about honing my skills, in a diverse manner. Hearing tips from different vocal stylists gives a well rounded backdrop. Having classes with many renowned singers, some of which I've encountered on my many jazz cruises, is joyful!
